In the XX century after being widowed of the Conde Hermenegildo (or Mendo)Gonçalves, the Countess Mumadona Dias, assumes the Portuguese County and takestwo very important measures, on the lower part of Guimarães, the St. MaryMonastery (around the year 950) and, at the high part, a castle, called S.MamedeCastle (between the years 950 and 957).

The construction of this castle was necessary to defend the newly built monastery, andthe people that, meanwhile, were setting next to these two buildings. The constructionof this Castle was also a way of asserting his power before the other feudal lords.A certificate that marks the delivery of the Castle of S.Mamede Castle to theGuimarães Monastery, on 4 December, 968, is the first known reference to thisfortification.
